Paul Roberts

Paul Roberts is based in Florence and acts both as my copyist and as liaison with the publisher which holds most of my work: Universal Edition (UE) (London), now taken over by the main office, in Vienna.

He was a former PG composition student of mine (also working with Emeritus Prof. Jonty Harrison ) at The University of Birmingham, and he knows my music very well indeed. We have collaborated for over 25 years now, and there is absolutely no reason for this to end; my full scores and performance materials aim to reach the highest standards of UE (Vienna). We collaborate very closely when engraving each new (and old) score. A good many of my UE scores and performance materials have been processed, from In transit onwards, including the Chamber concerto. We are now restoring some of my very earliest works - just a few - which are still in manuscript. All my work for Composers Edition is already processed, using exclusively FINALE.

Paul worked for Luciano Berio until his untimely death in 2003, for over 13 years. He prepared full scores, performance material, piano reductions for 1st performances and scores for publications of well over 50 works, ranging from the Sequenzas through other chamber music (e.g. Circles etc.), orchestral scores (e.g. Eindrücke etc.), concerto scores (e.g. Concerto II, Chemins IV etc.) to the full scale operas La vera storia and Un re in ascolto and the new ending for Puccini’s unfinished opera Turandot.

He also produced scores for other composers including Pierre Boulez, Harrison Birtwistle, Wolfgang Rihm, Arvo Pärt, and the film composer Ennio Morricone. UE (Vienna) together with the International Mahler Society is in the process of producing the New Gustav Mahler Complete Edition and Paul has already prepared 4 important Mahler scores for this edition (Symphony nº 1 in two versions, Symphony nº 4 and Das Lied von der Erde). For the ongoing Berg Complete Edition he has prepared the volume of the complete Jügendlieder and will soon begin work on Lulu.

Other composers whose work Paul has prepared for important publications are Morton Feldman and Leos Janacek (Sinfonietta), as well as past work of Italian composers for RICORDI.
