VIC Hoyland is not a familiar name. Yet his music, if this excitable coupling of two orchestral works is anything to go by, has remarkable personality, originality and an easy-going sense of adventure. In Transit seethes with biting rhythms, bold and crusty textures and a melodic style that is often beautiful without recourse to sentimentality. Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra give it a vigorous, crisp and petulant reading. The more expansive and beguiling imagery of Vixen is equally well captured.
